Double J's? Double Jeopardy!!

What do you get when you put two J's (Jane and Jin) together? Double Jeopardy!!

Ever since Jin and I first became "friends" (I say "friends", with apostrophes, for we can sometimes be the worst "rivals"!) in Primary 1, life in school was never a dull moment. We would compete to see who received the better grade, sometimes to the embarrassing extent of begging the teacher for just that one extra mark. Each of us would smirk as we casually slipped our grade reports to the other's desk with the thought, "Look who's got more brains!".

And such rivalry is not merely confined to the bounds of academia.

Whenever the teacher announced a contest, we would always be the first two students to volunteer ourselves. Sometimes, we would even compete to see who ended up volunteering first - how kiasu of us eh? Oh, in case you're not familiar with the jargon, kiasu is a Chinese slang meaning "fearful of losing". Or in other words, just plain competitive. From the amateurish story-telling contests in primary school to the more prolific debates and elocution contests in high school, both of us would proudly represent our classes respectively and aimed to defeat the other in a bid to represent our school and earn bragging rights for the year.

I can still clearly remember a time in 2003 when we were seniors in high school. The school was forming a team to compete in an inter-school Scrabble tournament. And like those "mini climaxes" you view in Oscar-worthy movies (cue: *dramatic soundtrack music plays in background*), only one spot was left in the team.

And the contenders left to clinch that final spot? The double J's.

Jin demonstrated his air of confidence as he told me to give it up. Great Scrabblers have always been males and the XX chromosome species never really stood much of a chance. Real-life evidence? The other two spots in the team were both filled by guys.

But I wasn't ready to give up just like that. Jin has clearly forgotten that the female species can be very determined and strong-willed at times (or stubborn, as some may call it). We fought it all out on one final Scrabble match. As we tallied the scores along the way, we could see that it was a neck-to-neck competition. As the tiles in the bag began to run out, Jin exclaimed during his turn, "You're dead this time, Jane."

Much to my horror, Jin tilted his tile rack and all seven tiles came toppling over onto the board. This could only mean one thing: Jin was aiming for a bingo. In Scrabble, a bingo happens when a player uses all seven tiles on his rack in a single play. Not only does the player earn a bonus 50 points and an uplifting ego boost, it is a psychologically crippling moment for the opponent who, ironically, senses a sudden moment of paralysis. And I felt my limbs go stiff as Jin began to form a word on the board.

BEATLES

I stared in disbelief! Beatles?! That's not even a valid word in the Scrabble dictionary!! Somehow, I managed a calm composure and my expression gave nothing away. I must have felt really generous that day as I told Jin that "Beatles" isn't a valid word and suggested if he wanted to remove his tiles and have another go.

Indignantly, he replied, "Of course Beatles is a valid word! It's an insect, you idiot! You're just jealous coz I've scored a bingo!!"

Clearly Jin forgot who won the spelling bee contest in primary school.

"Err, Jin, you're sure that's how you spell 'beetles'?"

"Of course, I'm sure! You can challenge it if you want!"

And so, challenge it I did. The marshal checked up the word and told Jin that he lost his turn for an invalid word. It was then his turn to look horrified as I reminded him that The Beatles is the name of an English band featuring John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, while "beetles" would be the right spelling for the insect.

The game was then downhill for Jin from that moment on. Scarred with the thought of his mistake, Jin could not focus on the game properly. And knowing what tiles he had, I figured the possible words he would play and strategically blocked him by placing my words down first. Needless to say, I became the only girl in the school team and we competed all the way to national finals where all those "mini climaxes" summed up into "one huge final climax": one teammate has won his match while the other has lost his and the game I played would decide which team would walk away with the glorious title of national champions that year. Playing as calmly as I could in a stiffer match than the one I played with Jin, we eventually won the title and became headliners. Smiling continuously for more than 10 minutes for the media was one delightfully "painful" highlight I would never forget.

And Jin never forgave himself for the "Beatles/beetles" mistake he made.

Perhaps such a turn of events was only fair enough to compensate for a most unfortunate incident we both encountered in Primary 6. Our mutual friends decided to play a prank by leaving me a love letter that was supposedly composed by Jin. Though I initially suspected that it was our friends' doing, those young actresses could really put up quite a show and feign their innocence. And so I confronted Jin who was busily singing away on some Disney love ballads (it was a habit of his and I've lost count of the number of times he sang A Whole New World). Jin grabbed the note and proceeded to walk away with it as he finished, denying that he wrote it.

Not knowing why I did so at that time, I asked him to return the note. When he didn't, I began to give chase (up till today, I don't know why I even bothered). Soon, it became a game of catch-me-if-you-can but such childish humour quickly evaporated into more serious business when we bumped into the vice principal and the note that Jin clutched in his palm soon came sailing down onto the ground.

Only to be picked up and read by the vice principal.

It was most excruciating trying to explain to the vice principal what has happened. This is perhaps one of the most embarrassing moments in my life. Here we were, in the vice principal's office, getting ourselves into trouble, while the monsters of our two friends got away scot-free (though they did eventually get a nice long lecture from both Jin and I later on). I never ceased to blame Jin - if only he had returned the note when I asked him to.

I could go on and on to share more stories but it may well be wise to stop here. As we both grew up, we have come to tolerate each other's antics. Our lives are made more "enriched" by such experiences and tales that we would never grow sick of retelling. And though we still try to outdo each other these days as young adults, our competitions take on a more "mature" approach as we learn humility and begin to prioritize God and other more important matters in our Christian walk. For instance, I recently backpacked across Australia alone while he backpacked across Europe. It was hard to argue who really "won" so we both shook on it, agreeing that our days of Double J's for Double Jeopardy have turned into days of Double Joy.

Speaking of all this classic boy vs girl rivalry, Disney (I could almost imagine Jin crooning away on A Whole New World once again, lol!) has recently released Tangled (Australian release date: 6th January, 2011). It's the talk of the town: the fairytale of Rapunzel spun into an animated 3D musical comedy. Will it be a case of Double Jeopardy for Rapunzel and Flynn or will things turn out happily ever after into Double Joy?

Well, go catch it in theatre if you want to find out! Judging from all the great reviews, this is perhaps Disney at its best so far. Here's a trailer for you to start straightening out those to-watch-or-not-to-watch tangled emotions:

If you're anything like me, you will not be sitting still till you've watched Tangled. And watch I will come later this evening. Less than 12 hours to go before a cinema date with some friends - can't wait!!

And if you're like Jin who loves everything Disney (me too, actually, hehe), check out this cool local official website for Disney:

http://home.disney.com.au/movies/

Ok, here's me signing off for the night (day?) - time for me to catch some sleep (gosh, it's past 5AM!!) and reserve some energy for Tangled later... ;)

Ps. Happy birthday, dearest mummy! Thanks for making me your princess... and buying me my very first Disney collection: a colour-illustrated Disney's Aladdin storybook with an accompanying story and song audio cassette (yes, this was way before the time CD's and mp3's became popular)...

PPs. This is my 200th blog post... ^_^

My friend passed away on my birthday... :(

Sad... So sad...

I was checking through Nuffnang Analytics and found it amusing that someone actually arrived at my blog while doing a Google UK search on "jane gun shih ying". Thought it would be interesting if I replicated the search myself to see what came up. One thing led to another and before I knew it, I came across an old newspaper article:

http://thestar.com.my/lifestyle/story.asp?file=/2004/3/26/features/7615465&sec=features

It was written by a dear old friend, Leonard, whom sadly has passed away just a few months after writing that article. Reminiscing about that moment 5 years ago, I decided to Google "wong siang hume" to see what came up. Somehow I must have missed out on this article when it got published:

http://thestar.com.my/lifestyle/story.asp?file=/2004/8/27/features/8744143&sec=features

Yes, back then I knew he passed away in August - I was traveling back home after class when I received a text message from a fellow Scrabbler and read the shocking news about this sad demise... but imagine my bigger shock when I found out just minutes ago that his passing away happened exactly on my birthday!! So while I was celebrating the day I was given the breath of life, another soul has just ceased...

Dear Leonard,

You have always been a great inspiration to me. Some people think it strange that I'm friends with someone more than thrice my age but age never really was a barrier, was it? I thank God that He has blessed me with the opportunity to know you and call you my friend. Thank you for imparting your wisdom on life. Thank you for the many delightful conversations we shared. Thank you for your wonderful friendship. I know that you've returned home to the Lord and am assured by it... When I blow out the candles on my cake each year, I'll remember that the many years of life experiences I have gathered are made richer because of our friendship. Thank you...

Reminiscing our friendship forever,
Jane

Friday the 13th

A new record has been made - this is the first time I have blogged 3 days in a row!!!

Ok, back to serious business, today is Friday the 13th. Many believe it to be an unlucky day but I'm not that superstitious - more so when my sports house (Rumah Unggul) won the overall champion title on Sports Day back in 2002 when it was held on Friday the 13th...

But Friday the 13th may spell bad news for some criminals... On my way to CRUfAD this morning, I saw both the Channel Seven and Nine vans parked outside the Darlinghurst Courthouse with several news crew and reporters outside the courthouse - wonder what's going on inside...

The Darlinghurst Courthouse

The 7 News van

Justice is served...

Curious to know what may be "the big deal", I decided to do a little online search to see what the national news have in store today. A very interesting result emerged and I suspect the juicy bit of news may be connected to the hype outside the courthouse today - but I may be wrong as it wasn't mentioned specifically which court the case was trialled - read below for the doped-up news... literally, haha...

Top NSW cop refused bail on drug charges

11:37 AEST Fri Jun 13 2008

A top NSW crimefighter facing charges over an alleged multi-million dollar drug conspiracy has been refused bail in a Sydney court.

Mark Standen, 51, an assistant director of the NSW Crime Commission and a former federal police officer, was arrested and charged last week over an alleged conspiracy to import 600kg of pseudoephedrine.

Standen's lawyer Paul King provided Magistrate Allan Moore with written submissions on Thursday.

Mr Moore on Friday ruled that Standen would remain in custody on the grounds he was too great a flight risk.

Standen appeared in court via audio visual link from special protective custody.

Standen was among a group of people arrested in Australia, The Netherlands and Bangkok over an alleged bid to import enough of the precursor chemical pseudoephedrine to manufacture 480kg of the illegal drug ice.

The chemicals were allegedly due to be shipped into Australia inside a container of rice from Pakistan and by several other methods.

Mr Moore said he had taken into consideration written statements from Standen's two eldest children as well as his current "undesirable" situation in protective custody.

However, he said given Standen's former position in the NSW Crime Commission, there was too great a risk of him leaving the country for him to post bail.

"I can't ignore his position within the Crime Commission," Mr Moore said.

"He has information about methodology which could assist his departure from the country."

Standen's family attended court on Friday but refused to answer media questions outside.

Hair Makeover! *Edited*

Edited: Due to a mistake and some comments, I've swapped the 2nd photo with another one which should be better, hehe... And nope, I didn't use any photoshop (unlike what Chia Chean said) - just merely the tool on the website and a photo of myself! =P

Inspired by Shir Li's "hair makeover" at www.hairmixer.com, I decided to give it a try and tinkled with it for a little while. Below are my top 3 picks after trying out less than 10 styles (can't be bothered to waste time trying on every style available). Vote now for your favourite by keying in IDOL1 for pick 1, IDOL2 for pick 2, or IDOL3 for pick 3 and sms to IDOLS or 43657... Lol, that was just a parody of the Idol TV show (American, Australian, Malaysian, whatever!) - not promoting idolatry here, mind you - idolatry's ungodly!!! =( Anyway, just leave a comment either on this post or on the tagboard ya? Who knows? If I've got the mood and money (or if someone sponsors me, hehe), I may just go for the most popular hairdo as voted by you readers! =)

Makeover 1

Makeover 2

Makeover 3

Can't wait to get your responses! =P It's gonna be a long weekend for me with the Queen's birthday on Monday - whee! ^_^

Updates

My creativity is running dry at this point, hence, the simple and plain title "Updates"... Not much to say except severe procrastination which is exemplified by taking all sorts of photos like the ones below:

That's the design in front of this year's MedSoc T-shirt - rather cute, I think - see if you can get it... Bought it earlier this week at the MedSoc Council meeting - my first meeting this year as International Students' Representative! UNSW Medicine international students, if you wanna get involved, drop me a line at international@medsoc.org.au !

That's the first ever photo of Dian and I together (taken before TKC's commencement dinner). Dian's my "alcove daughter" this year at Basser - she's a first year med student (ah, a gal after my own heart, lol). She's Indonesian but has lived in Singapore almost all her life. We seem to connect really well and I heart this junior of mine... Dian, if you're reading this, don't forget the pact we made about shopping after exams! =)

Ok, I'm not going to bother posting anymore photos. Just a quick note to some of our SPM/STPM leavers: congrats to those who excelled, and to those who didn't (or think they didn't), don't get too upset - the world hasn't ended. All the best for your scholarship/university applications and may you strive to pursue that dream career of yours! Don't ever give up! ^_^

Farewells & Uncertainties

Three months may seem a long time but three months can just pass you by in a blink. Summer break had come and is now going – time to start uni again and get myself busy, more so with End-of-Phase 1 exams looming round the corner. I know it’s in May but one can’t help but get the nagging feeling that two months is indeed shorter than three months and those two months is no honeymoon to fit in more than two years’ work into the human brain. It’s just another two more days to go before the airplane transports me back to Sydney (I'm heading back on Tuesday). While I say hello to the joy of meeting friends back in uni and the woes of becoming a worn-out study machine soon, I realise that this also means farewell to family and friends back here. I’ll miss you all but if all goes well, one year will fly by quickly too and I’ll see you again as we swap stories and laugh over a cup of coffee.

Thanks for the good times, "IMU Gang"... =)

On another note, more interesting events are coming our way that are worth keeping an eye on. First up is the Oscars / Academy Awards which will be telecasted live tomorrow – wonder if there’s going to be any record-breakers or setters? Next are the elections – both here in Malaysia and miles away in the US. Will Barisan Nasional (BN) garner a huge victory again or will the strategy of having one instead of two contestants within the same constituency by opposing Barisan Alternatif (BA) yield fruitful results? John McCain seems set to be the Republican rep but how will it fare for the Democrats? Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton? Either way, if the Democrats win, history will be made as it will either be jotted down as the first Black or female President in US history. A less significant event but intriguing nonetheless is the voting of cities to be included in the latest Monopoly version – Monopoly Here & Now: The World Edition. With loyal citizens around the globe voting frantically to get their shortlisted cities listed as one of the twenty-odd spots on the board, why not go to http://www.monopolyworldvote.com/en_US/world and start voting daily too? Root on for Kuala Lumpur and Sydney! =P

So many events and so many uncertainties but oh well, time will tell.

Till then, adios amigos and I'll write again as soon as I can, this time from Sydney...

My New Haircut

After a good long year of long hair, I went for a haircut today. I prefer long hair personally but I guess short hair will be more manageable in the long run, more so when it's still going to be hot when I return to Sydney in 1+ week's time and I won't be getting a haircut for another year i.e. long hair will be pursuing soon before I know it, hehe... Anyway, here's a shot of my new look with shoulder-length hair... Maybe you readers can give me your views - does short hair suit me better than long hair or the other way around?

Ps. I've updated some stuff on my blog - all posts are now labeled and the label index is just screaming out at you from the side-box! =P

SOOV'D

SOOV’D = Singles’ Outing On Valentine’s Day

That’s exactly what I did yesterday with both Nat and Stef. We met up in KL Sentral (Nat’s from Seremban while Stef’s from Subang) and Nat was sweet (as ever) to present us gals with a single rose each. We hopped on the LRT – our first stop: KLCC.

How’s this amateur shot of the nation’s pride taken with a mobile phone 2.0MP camera? =P

Bought tickets for the very first screening of Jumper (opened in cinemas yesterday) but much to our disappointment, the high-impact movie was disrupted half-way by glitches like upside down images, voices being played rewind, disappearing images and disappearing voices. Despite the cinema staff working on the problem for half an hour, the problem repeated itself and we were finally directed to the counter for a full refund. All three of us agreed that this is probably one of the most memorable Valentine’s Day for us – I can safely say that not many cinema-goers would ever chance upon such a viewing experience, lol.

The single’s trio camwhoring away in the dark theatre while waiting for the cinema staff to fix the glitch

We finally decided that instead of getting cash return, we asked for Kung Fu Dunk tickets – the movie was entertaining – lame, yes, but funny all the same. We also strolled through KLCC Park. Lunch was at Madam Kwan’s while dinner was at the food court. Met up with Stef’s dad (he works in Petronas) who whisked us to our second stop: Midvalley Megamall. A little more walking here and there (with the occasional glances at couples wearing matching T-shirts and extravagant displays of choc/teddy bear/flower bouquets) brought us to our third stop: Gardens KL. By the time I got back home, it was nearly midnight. Whoa, 3 malls within the same day – how many couples actually accomplish such a feat on V Day? Cheers to the singles! =D

In Loving Memory of Nian Ning (1987-2008)

Lee Nian Ning (1987-2008)

Though I may not know Nian Ning for long, the passing away of this junior of mine at uni is certainly a loss to be mourned - to her family, friends, and even the nation (she was a JPA scholar). Here was a bright and promising girl who had everything at her feet but fate decided that time was up for her. A bus crash robbed her of her life over the weekend - the bus driver (who had 13 summonses) only escaped with a broken leg. It reminds me of how short and unexpected life can be - one moment, one may be laughing away; the next moment, that same person's gone with the wind. It shouldn't have happened. But it has. And the best we can do now is pray and reflect upon it. My heartfelt condolences go out to her family. To Nian Ning, may you rest in peace. You will always be missed.

Karangan Budak Sekolah Rendah

Came across the following essay in my friend's blog (check out Syamil's blog!) - his dad forwarded it to him... Can't help laughing at how a primary school kid's imagination can really roam wild - lol, reminds me of the good old days of innocence and naivety when I was younger... Anyway, here's the hilarious "karangan budak sekolah rendah" reproduced with Syamil's permission... Have fun and laughs reading it! I sure did! xD

Pagi itu pagi minggu.

Cuaca cukup sejuk sehingga mencapai takat suhu beku.

Dia menghulurkan tangan ingin bersalam.

Tetapi emak saya masih marah.

Not bad, eh? =P

More on Table For Two...

Haha, after reading Michelle's blog, I felt like I need to update my "curious" friends with the newspaper links since not everyone will be laying their hands on a copy of the papers today - come on, admit it, you guys are busy collecting ang pows, eh? :p

So, here's the link to yesterday's news: "When StarEducation plays matchmaker"

And here's the link to today's ones:
"A dip into romance" and "Of choc and chat"

Ah, I guess these 3 links are more than sufficient to keep you all occupied... :)

Table For Two

As some of you may have known, I recently took part in Star Education's "Table For Two" contest and was selected as one of the winners for a blind date on Valentine's Day. The date was in Chocz, KLCC where 10 of us (5 guys and 5 gals) were treated to chocolate fondue. We started off with a round of speed dating where the poor guys have to shift from on table to the other every 5 minutes. At the end of it, we were then told by The Star's staff as to who our date of night is, which is followed by the date itself with the chocolate fondue that lasted about an hour or so. When it was finally over, everyone exchanged gifts and contact details, not forgetting to capture shots... Speaking of which, here are some for you to peruse...

My date, Ahmed, and I

The question slips that the Star provided in case we ran out of topics...

The chocolate fondue with fruit platter

Valentine gifts from Ahmed...

Lian Meng, my senior from high school, was selected too!

Quan Ming's from DJ too! Small world, eh?

Lol, Jan Leong, you should have gone to study med too instead of underestimating yourself! :p

Michelle and Serena, it was great knowing you gals!

All 10 of us! ^_^
(Gals: Masami, Serena, Michelle, Joo Lee, me. Guys: Ahmed, Lian Meng, Quan Ming, Lead Choon and Jan Leong)

Interested to read more? Why not check out what Star Education wrote about us? Check it out here... And if you're still curious, go get the Star this Sunday (1st day of CNY) - I wonder what the journalists wrote about us... Hmm... <staring blankly ahead while mind wanders off...>

Interclub Commitee Conference (ICC)

Being the new publisher for UNSW's Malaysian Students Organization (MSO), I attended the ICC for committee members of all Malaysian students affiliated university bodies in New South Wales. It was held in University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) last Saturday and we had lots of fun in the games with yours truly winning the 1st round on behalf of MSO... :p Here are some photos from ICC...

The MSO Committee 2006...

...and their nametags

The MSA (Macquarie Uni) reps in green battling out kungfu style with the SUAMS (Sydney Uni) reps in black...

While others "yamseng" with drinks, we did it in style with our packed dinners...

JX and Sheila clingwrapped together in the Prez and VP's round...

In the final bonus round... Danny passed a superbly long verbal message (about 1 minute long) to me...

...to which I passed on to Hui-Xieng, our "tai ka che" publisher

Victory is sweet as MSO gains bragging rights for the rest of the year as ICC 2006 champion!

I'm looking forward to ICC 2007! ^_^

Iron Chef Midnight Cook-off

Late Monday night, we had the Iron Chef Midnight Cook-off where the 2 contenders were Eunice and Junxian of course! In case you wonder why, it was Eunice's birthday on Monday and Junxian's birthday on Tuesday, so Arooke has kindly organised this event to celebrate both their birthdays together. For those of you who've never watched the TV show "Iron Chef", it's actually having 2 teams who've to cook up at least 3 dishes using the mystery ingredients and the main dish has to be a "cake" that looks like the birthday girl or boy (depending whose team you're in!). I was assigned to be in Junxian's team and everyone just created a bunch of edible mess by the end of the night! To get a better idea, have a look at some of the photos below...

Arooke's invitation card to "the gang" to join in the cook-off...

The cake depicting Junxian's face... The strawberries are his hair and nose while the raspberries are his eyes. A banana will do for his mouth... Notice how much "mashed raspberry self-made jam" we spread over the whole cake to make him look super-red as he usually looked after a couple of drinks...

Eunice's team had to cope with Lemington's, M&Ms and lotsa choc and Nutella... Here's what her team thinks her face should look like...

A small portion of the "edible mess" we created by the end of the 30-minutes cook-off...

The birthday boy and I...

The birthday gal and I...

And thanks, Arooke, for organising this superbly fun yet hilarious event that just strengthens the bonds of us Basserians! ^_^
